Do you call your evening meal supper or dinner? And is the sweet treat to finish off the dining experience called pudding or dessert?

While it might sound like meaningless information, it can actually speak volumes about your class, according to a former royal butler.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Julius F Smith, former royal butler and founder of Regal Afternoon Tea, has revealed the secret signs that reveal whether you're really middle or upper class.

And it's not just limited to food, but everything from the type of car you drive to the sports you enjoy and what kind of doorbell you possess.

The secret signs revealing your class...

The evening meal

Upper: It's called supper, and it's served at 8pm. And you conclude with a traditional English 'pudding', like trifle.

Middle: It's dinner in your household, and 7pm is the preferred time. The concluding sweet dish is called dessert, and it'll likely be something French or Italian.

Cutlery

Upper: Cutlery has been passed down through the generations, including the different knives and forks for every type of food.

Middle: It's all about John Lewis cutlery sets. Bonus points if they're multi-coloured.

Tea cups or mugs

Upper: There's only one way to have a cup of tea: with a teacup and saucer.

Middle: You prefer bone china.

Staff

Upper class: Staff is the housekeeper who's been with the family for years and is basically a member of the family now.

Middle class: There's a single cleaner who rarely stays more than six months.

Clubs

Upper: You don't eat peas. They're common and difficult to eat.
