As part of its efforts to develop the Andhra Pradesh model of education into a benchmark for the country, the School Education Department in the State is sending 29 of its best teachers, selected in 2026, to Finland, where they would undergo training from August 17 to 26 and participate in a Professional Development Programme at the University of Turku.

This is part of the government’s International Professional Development Programme, aimed at transforming outstanding teachers into global leaders in education. Earlier this year, 37 teachers were sent to Singapore.

Exposure to international systems

A press release on Saturday said the programme aims to expose teachers to international education systems, innovative teaching methods, and strengthen the quality of teaching and learning in Andhra Pradesh. Developed in collaboration with the University of Turku, the programme focuses on early childhood education and basic education, with emphasis on child-centred learning, joyful pedagogy and play-based education.

Three-phase training

The programme is being implemented in three phases. The three phases include orientation: a four-day in-person programme was already conducted in Vijayawada by three Finnish experts, covering the Finnish education system, teaching methods, development projects and mentoring; Finland visit (August 17-26): teachers will gain eight days of practical learning experiences in Turku and Rauma, including classroom observations, educational visits, early childhood education centres and interactions with teacher educator; and online mentoring: after returning, teachers will receive continued guidance through three structured online mentoring sessions. They will develop and implement school-based projects focused on improving teaching and learning.

Expected outcomes

Teachers will gain exposure to international educational practices, classroom environments, digital tools and learning resources, while developing leadership and mentoring skills. The programme will also promote joyful, inclusive and student-centred school cultures.

After returning, the teachers will implement development projects in their schools and serve as resource persons and mentors for fellow teachers at district and mandal levels. Selected schools will establish demonstration classrooms showcasing play-based and joyful learning approaches.

The government plans to document successful practices, develop a repository of innovative teaching resources, monitor project outcomes and assess improvements in student engagement, learning outcomes and well-being. The initiative is intended to strengthen foundational learning and advance Andhra Pradesh’s vision of providing high-quality, inclusive and joyful education aligned with global standards.
