Kate O'Connor has claimed the gold medal in women's heptathlon at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

She did enough in the 800m final to stop her Dutch opponent from claiming top spot.

The 25-year-old has added a European gold medal to her Commonwealth Championships gold medal and world championships silver medal.

There are four more finals featuring Irish athletes on Saturday.

Jack O'Leary and Andrew Coscoran are the only Irish representatives in their respective finals.

O'Leary is in the 1000m final at 8:20pm, while Coscoran's 500mfinal begins at 9:07pm.

Following fourth place finishes in their heats, the men's and women's 4-by-100 metres relay teams are both part of the eight-team line-ups for tonight's finals.

The men's event gets underway after 9:30pm, with the women's team taking to the track just before 9:50pm.
