Deteriorating condition of roads in Tiruchi is causing concern among the motorists. Though poor condition of roads in interior parts of the Tiruchi Corporation limit is common, arterial roads and bus routes too have joined the list of poorly maintained roads.

Important stretches around the Central Bus Stand such as Rockins Road, McDonalds Road, and Williams Road, have witnessed significant deterioration. Some of these roads that were laid recently have been damaged. With heavy vehicle movement continuing through these roads, the loose surface material has begun to dislodge, worsening driving conditions, locals charged.

Many interior roads in residential areas, including K.K. Nagar, Kattur, Tiruverumbur, Crawford, Srirangam, Bheema Nagar, Varaganeri, and other areas continue to remain badly damaged. Saththara Veedhi, Vadakku Vasal, and Manickapillai Theru are among the roads in poor condition in Srirangam.

The condition of commercial hubs such as Big Bazaar Street, Chinnakadai Veedhi, and NSB Road is no better. Drivers point to drastic deterioration in the condition of roads in recent months. “The roads are full of potholes. They have become unfit for motoring,” K. Mohan, a resident of Varaganeri.

Enquiries revealed that the condition of most roads, which were laid immediately after the DMK government assumed office in 2021, had deteriorated. Similarly, the state of roads laid in 2023 and 2024 had been deteriorating fast. There were many roads that were not laid even after the end of the five years period, and they were in worse condition.

V. Jawahar, Congress councillor representing Ward 2, said several announcements were made in the Budget 2026-27 of the Tiruchi Corporation on laying new roads in the city. Except for the roads which were tendered before the announcement of the State elections, no new road in the city had been repaired or relaid.

Mayor M. Anbazhagan said ₹1.5 crore had been sanctioned for carrying out repairs and patchwork of roads in five zones of the Corporation. Online tender had been floated. Once the contractor was finalised, patchwork of badly damaged roads would be carried out.
