In what could be one of the slowest burns in tech history, Google finally launched the Google Pixel Tag at Made by Google 2026 this week.

It's pretty much what we expected — but the jury's still out on whether that's a good thing in mid-2026.

I once thought it was exhausting following the rumor mill leading up to Apple's AirTag, but the Pixel Tag took that to a new level.

After all, Apple was arguably breaking new ground in 2021. Whatever Google was building over the past three years could only refine the art. That became even more apparent as we watched its Android partners whizz past it.

That's not to say that the Pixel Tag isn't a good product — it surely is. The question is whether it has a reason to exist at all.

The tech world's worst-kept secret

From Grogu to the Nest Locator Tag

We saw the first hint that Google was actively working on its answer to the AirTag in January 2023, when code sleuths found evidence of a new locator product named Grogu.

With the second birthday of the AirTag approaching, hopes ran high that we'd see a reveal at Google I/O 2023.

Instead, Google laid the plumbing with its revamped Find My Device network. That was an important first step that echoed what Apple had done two years earlier.

The key difference is that Apple had the AirTag ready to go. Its early Find My network rollout was a calculated strategy to show it embracing compatible third-party accessories before sweeping in with its own.

In May 2023, I briefly hoped Google might be doing the same thing, and its new "Nest Locator Tag" (as the rumor mill had pivoted to by then) was just around the corner. Spoiler alert: It wasn't.

Instead, Google seemed to be satisfied to give other companies a three-year head start before offering its solution. But there may have also been a method to this seeming madness.

Learning from Apple's mistakes

By letting Apple take a healthy lead in personal item trackers, Google sat back and watched as the iPhone maker bore the brunt of bad press that came from people abusing its technology.

Apple was pilloried by domestic safety advocates for not doing enough to prevent stalking, and it wasn't long before horror stories of people finding AirTags planted on them began to appear.

Several states also began passing legislation against AirTag stalking, showing how widespread the problem was becoming.

Ironically, it was the popularity of AirTags that became their own undoing. Tracking devices had already been around for years. Apple's problem was that the AirTag essentially commoditized stalking.

One of the biggest criticisms leveled against Apple was the gaping blind spot in its protections. While iPhone users would be alerted to an unknown AirTag, Android users were left in the dark.

Apple was forced to make several course corrections through firmware updates and new alerts. It also released Tracker Detect, an Android app that could scan for nearby AirTags.

Still, that was a stop-gap at best. It required users to know the app existed, install it, and then open it manually if they thought an AirTag might have been planted on them.

By the time I/O rolled around with the new Find My Device network, Google and Apple had teamed up to build tracking detection into their devices at a core OS level.

By August 2023, Android devices were detecting unwanted AirTags, but this cross-platform solution worked both ways.

Apple took a bit longer to get with the program. It didn't add Android tag detection until May 2024, but it's also fair to say it had the luxury of time.

The 'Kleenex' problem

While Google took baby steps, 'AirTag' became a household word

To say Apple had a massive head start on platform-level trackers would be an understatement.

Sure, Tile had gotten there years earlier, but it was a silo. Trackers could only be picked up by devices running the company's app — a crowdsourced network in the tens of millions.

By contrast, Apple had over a billion devices ready to locate nearby AirTags, greatly increasing the chances of finding your lost items.

Google had a similarly massive home field advantage on Android. But, perhaps from watching how Apple had been burned, the company chose to play it safe.

As a result, when third-party manufacturers like Pebblebee and Chipolo embraced Android, they found their trackers held back through no fault of their own.

Google's Find My Device network could easily have leapfrogged Apple's to become the largest crowdsourced item-tracking network on the planet, but its overabundance of caution squandered that.

After all, there are many more Android devices out there than iPhones, and Find My Device worked all the way back to Android 9, giving it a retroactive three-year lead on Apple's network.

Even as other companies dipped their toes into the Android pond, Apple's solution became entrenched as the gold standard for finding lost luggage or stolen bikes.

Although early attempts at Android tracking tags lacked the precision finding features that AirTags had become famous for, it wasn't long before the Moto Tag filled that void.

Launching with ultra wideband (UWB) support and seamless integration with both Google's network and Samsung's competing SmartTag ecosystem, it immediately felt like the product we'd been waiting for.

And it arrived two years before Google would show up with the Pixel Tag in hand.

Meanwhile, other companies continued to improve their tags. Today, Android users have an embarrassment of options to choose from.

So, what compelling reason is there to rush out and buy a Pixel Tag?

Table stakes for the ecosystem

The Pixel Tag is more for Google than for us

The short answer to that last question is: probably none.

The Pixel Tag distinguishes itself from the pack simply because it's made by Google.

That and the design are the only reasons to choose it over anything else. Whether those are compelling reasons depends on your personal tastes and brand loyalty.

The Pixel Tag is a very good product that should work flawlessly with the Find My Device network and offer UWB precision finding. But so many competing products.

That brings up the obvious question: Why does the Pixel Tag need to exist?

The best answer I can come up with is that it's a necessary part of the Pixel hardware puzzle.

After all, Samsung has its SmartTags, Apple has AirTags, and it's been obvious for a few years now that Google is going for the same broad ecosystem.

The Pixel Tag has been the one piece missing, but it's far from an exciting new frontier. It's really just Google filling in the blank space on its ecosystem scorecard.
