In a post on X, Sybiha said that Switzerland would provide approximately $730,000 for the preservation and restoration of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, whose Assumption Cathedral was damaged in a Russian attack two months ago, Ukrinform reports.

"I welcome Switzerland's decision to contribute around $730,000 to the preservation of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Ukraine's most important spiritual and cultural landmarks," he wrote.

According to the minister, this support carries particular significance today, because just two months before the Lavra's 975th anniversary, Russia deliberately struck this centuries-old sanctuary.

"While Russia seeks to destroy Ukraine's cultural heritage and erase our identity, our partners stand with us in protecting and preserving it for future generations," Sybiha added.

Earlier, Jacques Gerber, Switzerland's Federal Council delegate for Ukraine, said Switzerland would provide CHF 600,000 (approximately $730,000) through UNESCO to protect and restore the historic site.

"I am grateful to Switzerland for this tangible expression of solidarity and to the Swiss Federal Council Delegate for Ukraine Jacques Gerber for joining us in Kyiv on this important anniversary. Together, we are safeguarding Ukraine's heritage and an invaluable part of Europe's and the world's cultural legacy," Sybiha said.

In the early hours of June 15, a Russian attack drone struck the altar area of the Assumption Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The strike sparked a massive fire. About 80% of the roof structures and wooden elements of the dome were destroyed, while the cathedral's domes, walls and windows were damaged. During subsequent waves of the attack, or as a result of the blast wave, the John Calybite Tower, a 17th-18th-century defensive structure, was also damaged.

Switzerland, Greece and Japan have already expressed their readiness to contribute to the restoration of the Assumption Cathedral following the Russian attack.
