For over four decades, actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have shared one of Hollywood's most enduring friendships. From childhood friends and struggling actors to Oscar-winning collaborators, producers, husbands and fathers, the two have navigated every stage of life together. Speaking exclusively to India Today while promoting Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey in India, Damon reflected on what that bond has meant to him and revealed the biggest career gamble he and Affleck ever took.

Asked what having a constant like Affleck has taught him about finding 'home' in an industry as unpredictable as Hollywood, Damon said their friendship has been the anchor through every high and low. "Well, it's everything. We have been the closest of friends since we were really young, and so we experienced a lot of life together at different stages, from adolescence to our teenage years, to struggling years," he said.

The actor added that writing Good Will Hunting together became the turning point in both their lives, but their friendship has remained unchanged despite the fame that followed.

Damon said, "We obviously wrote the screenplay together that changed both of our lives and then experienced that change together and then became husbands and fathers. There is nothing like having somebody like that who can walk next to you through life and will be there when things are good, but will be there when things are tough. And he always has."

Damon also looked back at the career decision that felt the riskiest at the time but ultimately defined the actor he is today. Unsurprisingly, it too revolved around Good Will Hunting. Recalling the film's early days, Damon revealed that he and Affleck almost lost the project because they refused to compromise on their creative vision.

"The riskiest decision that we ever made was that there was a studio that was willing to make Good Will Hunting with a director that, I am sure, would have done a fine job, but wasn't the exact director we were looking for," he said, adding that rather than settling, the duo chose to walk away, even if it meant losing the film entirely.

"So Ben Affleck and I risked losing the movie. We said we are going to go set it up somewhere else, and they said if you can't, we are going to get the movie back and you guys are out. We could have gone for the version that might not have been the best it could be, but it was a sure thing. We decided to roll the dice and see if we could set it up somewhere else," he recalled.

The gamble paid off. Good Will Hunting (1997), directed by Gus Van Sant, went on to become a cultural phenomenon, earning Damon and Affleck the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and launching them into Hollywood's top league.

Damon currently stars in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o and Charlize Theron. The film is already creating new records for the filmmaker, and his team.
