Hayden Panettiere, the actor known for her roles in the superhero series Heroes and the horror franchise Scream, passed away on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36.

In a statement to ABC News, Panettiere’s representative said, “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her- and to the millions who watched her onscreen.” She is survived by her daughter Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, and parents Skip Panettiere and Lesley Vogel.

Panettiere’s popular films and career

Panettiere began her acting career when she was just 11 months old by appearing in a commercial for Playskool Toy Train in 1990. She then went on to star in soap operas and played Sarah Roberts on ABC’s One Life To Live and Lizzy Spaulding on CBS’s Guiding Light.

Panettiere was nominated for the Grammys for her voice-over of Princess Dot in A Bug’s Life. She achieved global stardom for her role as Claire Bennet in the science fiction series Heroes, followed by her playing Kirby Reed in Scream 4, the movie series which redefined the slasher-horror genre and is, to date, a cult classic. She also starred in Scream 6 in 2023.

Panettiere is also known for her role as the country music star Juliette Barnes in the drama series Nashville. She got two consecutive Golden Globe nominations for this character. Her final role was when she played Sarah Pangborn in the psychological thriller film Sleepwalker, which was released in January 2026.
