The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) for the installation of solar-powered highway lights at 37 accident-prone locations along the Icchapuram–Narasannapeta–Ranasthalam–Anandapuram section of National Highway-16 in Andhra Pradesh.

The project, estimated to be implemented at a cost of ₹6.75 crore, will cover a 197-km stretch of the highway. It is aimed at improving visibility and enhancing road safety at identified black spots through the installation of solar highway lighting systems.

According to NHAI, the initiative is expected to significantly improve night-time visibility at accident-prone locations, enhance commuter safety, facilitate smoother traffic flow and strengthen the overall reliability of highway infrastructure. The use of solar-powered lighting is also expected to provide an energy-efficient and sustainable solution for improving safety along the busy national highway corridor.

In a communication on Thursday, R.K. Singh, Chief General Manager (Technical) and Regional Officer, NHAI, said the project forms part of the efforts to improve road safety and deliver high-quality national highway infrastructure across the country.

He said the installation of solar lighting at vulnerable locations would contribute to reducing the risk of accidents during night hours.
