Over the years, we've seen users wanting to free themselves from being too attached to their smartphones. The simple answer is self-control. But if you're someone that doesn't have that type of restraint, then buying a modern dumbphone could be a good solution.
There are a few companies out there providing these types of devices, with Light being one of the first. While it's stuck to bar style phones for its past three releases, it's now changing things up with its first flip phone. The Light Flip costs $299 and comes in several colors.
Same experience, new shape
It's hard to say just how popular Light products are, but if it's made it to this point, there's a pretty good chance it's doing something right. The latest Flip delivers the same experience of its previous model, but offers it in a new shape. And for the most part, it looks like the brand has got the style just right.
You get physical number and directional buttons, along with shortcut keys. You get a 2.8-inch OLED screen, MediTek processor paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There's a 50MP camera on the rear, and a 12MP front-facing camera for selfies. Flip states that this phone should last a little over a day.
There's also support for 5G and 4G bands. If you're not sure about the bands supported in your country, be sure to check out the compatibility checker. Since there is only one version of the phone, you'll have to make due with what's available. If you don't think it'll work, don't risk it.
When it comes to the software experience, this phone runs LightOS, which provides the basics like alarm, calendar, timer, directory, directions, music, notes, voice recorder, weather, and a few other tools. There is a developer program, so expansion is possible. However, you'll want to make sure you can get by with these basics.
Be warned, the experience with these types of phones can be frustrating. If you're not sure about diving straight in, you can achieve this type of experience using apps. But if you want to take things a step further by grabbing new hardware, the Light Flip might just be what you're looking for.
