Red Hook Studios has announced new DLC for Darkest Dungeon, and not its 2023 sequel, Darkest Dungeon 2. The Fire's Edge will be the first major content update the horror roguelike has seen in six years. The DLC is set for release on Aug. 18, just over 10 years after Darkest Dungeon's initial launch. This adds to the growing list of games set to receive major expansions years after release, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The Fire's Edge will bring some of Darkest Dungeon 2 to its predecessor with The Duelist and The Runaway. Both characters debuted in the sequel and will add their unique abilities into Darkest Dungeon as part of the DLC. The Runaway will introduce the Burn mechanic, allowing players to set the dungeon ablaze during combat. The Fire's Edge will also introduce three new districts: the Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp. Additionally, new trinkets will be added. Red Hook concludes its official press release for the DLC by saying that new writing, events, and more surprises are to come.

Some fans have expressed worry that adding so much new content to the game could break mods that have existed for years, but Red Hook assures players that new tools are being developed for mod use. Like any new update, the adjustment period won't be immediate, so don't expect your favorite mods to work on day one with The Fire's Edge. The DLC will be released on the stated date for all platforms except Xbox, which Red Hook says will receive The Fire's Edge at a later date that has yet to be revealed.

Red Hook is just the latest developer to announce new content for games years after release. Perhaps most famously, 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting a new expansion, Songs of the Past, next year. Capcom also recently announced that 2024's Dragon's Dogma 2 is getting a Dark Arisen version later this year that adds quality-of-life improvements and an entirely new region.

Darkest Dungeon blends dungeon crawling, turn-based combat, roguelike mechanics, and horror into one incredible package. Darkest Dungeon 2 released in 2023 to a more mixed reception than its predecessor. While the core combat loop still felt rewarding, the move away from dungeon crawling was not as popular with fans of the original. Red Hook did reveal that fans can expect future DLC for Darkest Dungeon 2 in early 2027. No price for The Fire's Edge has been announced, but past DLC has often been priced at $9.99.
