She usually unwinds at Balmoral with King Charles, walking her dogs around the sprawling estate and curling up with a book.

But the Queen took a break from her usual summer retreat for a girls' day out - and a spot of retail therapy.

Less than eight miles from the royal residence, Camilla was seen popping in and out of shops in the Scottish village of Ballater with her sister Annabel Elliot, 77, daughter Laura Lopes, 48, and granddaughter Eliza, 18.

The Queen, 79, grinned as she left a store that sells Scottish cashmere, KT Boutique, armed with shopping bags on Monday.

Eliza, who was a flower girl at Prince William and Catherine's wedding in 2011 and joined them on the Buckingham Palace balcony, followed closely behind her grandmother.

Stocking up on holiday reads, the women visited a bookshop called A.B. Yule and left with paper bags.

The Queen's 16-year-old twin grandsons Gus and Harry Lopes also joined, though the teenagers appeared to tire of shopping quickly and headed back to the car.

They, along with her other grandson Freddy Parker Bowles, also 16, acted as Pages of Honour at the Coronation in 2023. All five of her grandchildren's names were famously embroidered in gold thread on her white gown for the ceremony.

Opting for a more understated look yesterday, the Queen wore jeans, a blue shirt, navy jumper and parka jacket.

Locals are used to spotting members of the Royal Family in the summer months. Last year Camilla, Laura and Eliza went on a similar shopping outing in Ballater.

The King, 77, has also performed a handful of low-key duties while in Scotland. On Friday he attended an event at Ballindalloch Castle in Speyside, run by the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society, of which he is a patron.

He also watched the Mey Highland Games at John O'Groats and paid a visit to Dingwall.

Charles and Camilla are expected to host a range of guests at Balmoral this year, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

The Queen is also set to travel down to York this week for the first day of races at the Ebor Festival.
