The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Thursday announced an extension of its Clean Toilet Picture Challenge till June 30, 2027, with the objective of further enhancing cleanliness and user experience at restrooms along national highways.

Launched in September 2025 and extended in January till June this year, the campaign has so far seen 429 highway users report unclean toilets and receive FASTag recharges worth ₹1,000 as rewards, the authority said in a statement here. The extension of the initiative aims to ensure continued public participation and effective implementation of the challenge, along with timely processing of FASTag recharge rewards linked to the initiative.

Under the campaign, unclean toilet pictures shared by highway users are assessed, and eligible claims under the scheme are processed in a time-bound manner. The FASTag recharge reward is credited to the user’s linked vehicle registration number (VRN), thereby enhancing transparency and responsiveness.

Open to highway users

The authority launched the unique challenge in September 2025 to encourage national highway users to actively report unclean toilet facilities at toll plazas.

Highway commuters can participate by uploading clear, geo-tagged and time-stamped photographs of unclean toilets through the latest version of the Rajmargyatra app. Users will also have to provide their name, vehicle registration number, and mobile number while submitting the picture.

Any user with a linked vehicle registration number (VRN) who reports an eligible instance will receive a ₹1,000 reward in the form of a FASTag recharge after verification through AI-assisted screening and manual validation.

Each VRN is eligible for only one reward during the scheme period. If multiple reports are submitted for the same facility on the same day, only the first valid submission made through the Rajmargyatra app will be considered.

The scheme is applicable exclusively to toilet facilities constructed, operated or maintained under NHAI’s jurisdiction, including at toll plazas and wayside amenities. Toilets located at retail fuel stations, dhabas or other public facilities are excluded.

The three coastal districts in Karnataka together have seven active toll plazas, with two in Dakshina Kannada, three in Udupi and two in Uttara Kannada districts.
