The Nagapattinam Municipality has announced a four-bin waste segregation system and door-to-door collection of solid waste in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

Under the new system, households, commercial establishments, and institutions are required to segregate waste at source into four categories using colour-coded bins. Green bins will be used for wet and biodegradable waste, blue for dry and non-biodegradable waste, red for sanitation waste, and black for special care and household hazardous waste.

The municipality has prescribed a schedule for collection. Wet waste, dry waste, and sanitation waste will be collected daily while household hazardous waste will be collected once a week every Wednesday.

Residents have been instructed to keep waste in the designated colour bins and hand it over to sanitation workers during door-to-door collection. Unsegregated waste will not be accepted.

The municipality has directed all establishments and organisations classified as Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) to mandatorily register with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, within 15 days.

The category includes commercial establishments, resident welfare associations, hotels and lodges, hospitals, educational institutions, IT parks, marriage halls, shopping malls, markets, and factories. Such establishments have been instructed to place the designated colour bins on their premises and ensure that segregated waste is handed over to sanitation workers for collection, a press note said.
