Apple is working on a second-generation iPhone Air, and it could address several key limitations of the current model. Here’s everything we know about the iPhone Air 2, including features, release date, and more.
Will there be an iPhone Air 2?
The iPhone Air has reportedly sold worse than Apple expected. The Information reported in November that Apple had indefinitely delayed the release of a second-generation model due to those lower-than-expected sales.
Apple reportedly “notified engineers and suppliers that they were taking the next iPhone Air off the schedule without providing a new release date.”
Shortly thereafter, however, The Information updated its reporting to say Apple wasn’t canceling the iPhone Air 2 altogether and that one is still very much in the works.
iPhone Air 2 features
A second camera
One of the biggest tradeoffs of the ultra-thin iPhone Air design is that it only has one camera. This is reportedly something Apple is pushing to change for the iPhone Air 2.
According to sources including Bloomberg and The Information, the iPhone Air 2 will have a second camera on the back.
Bloomberg says it will be an ultra-wide camera, not a telephoto camera. This would align it with Apple’s base model iPhones, which also have a main camera and an ultra-wide camera.
A20 Pro chip
The iPhone Air 2 will reportedly be powered by the A20 Pro processor, up from the A19 Pro in the current model.
The A20 Pro chip will be Apple’s first 2-nanometer iPhone processor. This new fabrication process will mean the A20 Pro can offer more power and be more efficient in a similar-sized footprint.
The chip will also use another new innovation called Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module, which integrates the SoC and DRAM at the wafer level for better performance and lower power consumption.
Better battery life
Apple is also reportedly working to improve the battery life of the iPhone Air 2.
According to a supply chain leak, the iPhone Air 2 will have a 3,500mAh battery. For comparison’s sake, the first-generation iPhone Air has a 3,149mAh battery, so this is an increase of more than 10%.
Beyond increasing the physical size of the battery, the iPhone Air 2 will likely offer longer battery life thanks to the efficiency improvements of the A20 Pro chip.
It’s important to remember, however, that there are many variables at play when it comes to an iPhone’s battery life. We’ll have to wait and see the exact numbers when Apple officially unveils the iPhone Air 2.
Vapor chamber
According to The Information, the iPhone Air 2 will feature a vapor chamber cooling system. Apple first debuted its vapor chamber cooling technology in the iPhone 17 Pro, touting significantly improved heat dissipation and performance.
If Apple brings the vapor chamber to the iPhone Air 2, it means the device will stay cooler during high workloads and sustain high performance for longer periods.
iPhone Air 2: Release date
The iPhone Air 2 was originally expected to be released in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
Most recently, however, Bloomberg reported that Apple plans to release the iPhone Air 2 in spring 2027 alongside the new base model iPhone 18.
