Police officer injured after car rammed in Auckland

Police say an officer has been injured when his patrol car was rammed twice in northern Auckland early on Wednesday morning.

Waitematā North Area response manager Senior Sergeant Carl Fowlie said a white ute was driving at 100km/h in a 50km/h zone in Manly, on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula.

"A patrol unit signalled for the vehicle to stop but the driver ignored instructions," Fowlie said.

"The driver then conducted a U-turn and rammed the patrol car before fleeing."

The police then pursued the driver towards Gulf Harbour but he turned his ute and rammed it into the police car again, this time head-on, Fowlie said.

"The officer received moderate injuries and was transported to hospital where they are currently being assessed."

The police vehicle was also extensively damaged.

Fowlie said the Eagle helicopter tracked the man as he scaled nearby fences, discarding items which turned out to be methamphetamine, scales and thousands of dollars in cash.

The man attempted to flag down passing vehicles without success but was caught a short time later.

"This was an incredibly dangerous act which could have resulted in serious harm to the officer who was doing their job.

"Police have zero tolerance for reckless behaviour on our roads or towards our staff, and we will hold these offenders to account," Fowlie said.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested and is facing charges including injuring a first responder with intent to injure, reckless driving and methamphetamine possession.
