More Than 100 Joan Miro Works Are Coming to Sao Paulo
Culture
Joan Miro, the Catalan painter and sculptor who died in 1983, is one of the towering figures of twentieth-century modern art, known for his playful shapes, bold colors and dreamlike imagery.
Now a large slice of his work is coming to Brazil.
The Exhibition
Titled Miro: Mestre das Formas, the show opens on August 7 at the MAB FAAP in the Higienopolis district of Sao Paulo and runs until October 12.
It gathers more than 100 original pieces spanning paintings, engravings, sculptures, tapestries, photographs and historical documents, a broad look at the artist’s range.
Rare Loans From Spain
Part of the appeal is rarity: some of the works have never been exhibited in Brazil, and a number had never left Spain before this show.
The pieces come from the Fundacio Joan Miro in Barcelona and the Fundacio Pilar i Joan Miro in Mallorca, and the exhibition was made possible after years of negotiation and the backing of the artist’s grandson, Joan Punyet Miro.
Why It Matters
Major loans of a modern master’s work are a coup for Sao Paulo, reinforcing the city’s place as Latin America’s cultural capital.
For visitors, it is a rare chance to see Miro’s world up close without crossing the Atlantic.
