A few days ago, I said that it would be lovely if the BBC, Whovians, and any future showrunner would lay off poor David Tennant in a desperate bid to save Doctor Who from permanent cancellation. I still stand by that.

Still, the universe has heard the pleas of fans who are in desperate need of more Tennant as the Tenth Doctor. That's right, there's even more time and space adventures for Tennant on the way, as he'll be reprising his role in a new audio drama from Big Finish — a British production company known for producing Doctor Who audio dramas and shorts.

However, instead of being joined by his well-known companions like Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, or Donna Noble, Tennant'll be joined by a companion who may not be familiar to fans who have only watched Doctor Who. Enter Anjli Mohindra, who is reprising her role as Rani Chandra. The Big Finish 12-episode audio drama series will be released in August 2027, and is titled Doctor Who — The Tenth Doctor and Rani.

Mohindra first stepped into the world of Who in the 2008 Doctor Who spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures. Rani, alongside Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, and the robot dog K9, helped former Doctor companion Sarah Jane Smith in protecting Earth from alien threats. Curious and passionate, Sarah Jane took Rani under her wing and helped her learn journalism. After Sarah Jane's death, Rani would go on to become one of the best journalists in the world.

The audio drama will reunite the Doctor and Rani, brought together by their connection to Sarah Jane. According to the official Big Finish news post, the three new adventures following the duo will see them investigate cryptids in modern-day Cumbria, crash the set of a 1970s sci-fi show, and even deal with a huge crisis at the coronation of Elizabeth I. It's never a slow day if you travel with the Doctor.

This isn't the first time that the Doctor and Rani have met. The Tenth Doctor also made an appearance in "The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith" from The Sarah Jane Adventures, though Rani was much younger than she is now. Whether that meeting will have any significance remains to be seen.

Tennant's return to Doctor Who might not be the triumphant return to the TV series as some fans might have hoped, but for Whovians who want more of Tennant before he first regenerated, this 12-episode series is a new epic adventure that provides just that.
