This is the moment a racehorse crashed to the ground, leaving a jockey injured after a mob of fans ran in front of the animal.

Jockey Giovanni Atzeni and his horse were the first to cross the finish line at Italy's prestigious Palio di Siena horse show on Tuesday.

During their victory lap, a swarm of fans ran into their path, causing the horse to fall to the ground.

Footage shows the moment a spectator got in the horse's way and collided with it, forcing the animal to crash over as Atzeni was flung through the air.

The horse was seen immediately getting up and was reported to have not been harmed; however, the jockey suffered a head injury and remains in hospital, according to local media.

Atzeni's condition is not considered to be serious, but he will remain under observation for the next few days.

The incident comes just days after a person was killed and several more were injured in the Swiss Alps after a horse-drawn carriage crashed into a tree.

Around 40 people were on two carriages in the woods in Val Roseg, near the border with Italy, on Saturday when the driver lost control, police said.

While driving downhill, the driver noticed the brakes were no longer working as he tried to steer the carriages to flatter ground to slow down.

However, one of the horses fell and the driver lost control of the carriage before crashing into a tree.

Passengers inside the carriage were thrown onto the path following the collision, police added.

A 73-year-old woman was killed, and two of the injured were in serious condition.

Two helicopters and several ambulances were sent to the scene, according to local reports.

A police statement said: 'On a sloping stretch of the route, the driver realised the braking power was insufficient and attempted to steer his three-horse carriage toward flatter ground to slow down.'

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
