In order to streamline the working process in budget and premium Mayura hotels owned by Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation across the State, officials have released Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to be followed by employees working there.
These SOPs aim to enhance the experience of visitors and are used to train staff working in the front office, kitchen, sales, marketing and other areas of hospitality.
A senior official from KSTDC said, “We have framed separate SOPs for kitchen, sales and marketing, housekeeping, safety and security, front office and serving food and beverages. At present, the staff members working at Mayura hotels already follow a set of rules, whether they are working in the kitchen, front desk or housekeeping. However, these SOPs will help us streamline the procedures and train our new staff members.”
KSTDC operates around 14 budget hotels and 10 premium hotels in major tourist locations across the State. It includes Nandi Hills, Srirangapatna, Ooty, Mysuru,
Training
The official said, “There are different chapters in each SOP book and at the end of the chapter, there are questions. These questions should be answered by the staff because it will help the trainer understand the staff’s knowledge.”
To train the staff, the department will enrol teaching faculty from The Food Craft Institute (FCI) in Mysuru, a government hotel management college owned by the Tourism Department. The official said that the training for one batch of employees will begin soon at FCI and the rest will follow.
The official also said, “We train our kitchen staff about the kinds of ingredients used in cooking food, the science behind using the spices, herbs and various nuts. It helps them have a better understanding if visitors have allergy issues towards spices or a particular nut or dry fruit. In such cases, the staff will inform the visitor about the ingredients present in the food before they order. It is left to the visitor to choose or drop the food from consumption.”
Meanwhile, the front office staff is trained to groom and present themselves well before the guests, greet them warmly, check the reservation list so that bookings don’t overlap, handle guests by speaking to them politely, issue room keys, explain the hotel amenities, and so on. Similarly, the housekeeping staff are trained to keep rooms and washrooms clean. The security staff are trained to check the functioning of CCTV cameras, recording and surveillance of important areas so that untoward incidents do not take place at hotels.
