A week-long food safety training programme for street vendors is currently under way in Theni-Allinagaram with the main objective of ensuring safe and hygienic food and a healthy society. The event is jointly organised by the Food Safety Department and Nestlé India.
Addressing the gathering at the inauguration, Theni Collector R. Vaithinathan said the event aimed at enhancing food safety and hygiene standards in Theni district.
Training and awareness sessions were being held on various aspects, including food safety, food quality, personal hygiene, safe food handling, cleanliness, and proper disposal of food waste.
Training for the street food vendors would be conducted for five days across Theni district. Street food vendors were urged to make use of the training programme and incorporate practices regarding food safety, personal hygiene, cleanliness, and food waste management into their daily business operations.
The Collector told the street food vendors to provide safe and high-quality food to the customers. The quality and the taste of the food should attract the customers to the shop, he said.
Details regarding various government welfare schemes for street food vendors were provided and eligibility criteria and application procedures were explained to them. Over 500 street food vendors participated in the training session.
The Collector distributed hygiene kits to the street food vendors to raise awareness about personal hygiene and safe food handling practices.
Designated Food Safety Officer R. Sasi Deepa; Narayanan Ramamurthy of Nestlé India; Food Safety Officers; representatives from National Association of Street Vendors of India; and others participated in the event.
