NAM College at Kallikkandy in Kannur remained closed on Wednesday (August 19) following protests by Muslim Students’ Federation (MSF) activists demanding the withdrawal of the suspension of the college union chairman. The protest turned violent when the Principal was allegedly assaulted by students.

College union office-bearers had allegedly entered classrooms to collect money from students for organising cultural programmes on the campus ahead of Onam. A few students reportedly objected to it, leading to protests and the subsequent suspension of some students by the management.

On Tuesday (August 18), MSF activists led by union chairman Mohammed Panol and secretary Sinan reached Principal A.P. Shameer’s chamber demanding that their suspensions be revoked. They also allegedly gheraoed the Principal although the latter reportedly told them that the matter could be discussed later.

The principal was also allegedly manhandled. He later sought treatment at a hospital.

The incident disrupted academic activities at the college. A holiday was announced on Tuesday in view of the tense situation.
