The Caulfield Cup will be the priority for Bjorn Baker when So You Are debuts for his stable on Saturday at Randwick as one of three runners aiming for the $5 million feature.

Stuart Ramsey-owned So You Are has joined Baker’s Warwick Farm operation from Armidale trainer Stirling Osland and will contest the group 3 Premier’s Cup (2000m) along with new stablemate Thebudgiesmugla.

So You Are was less than a length away from winner Thebudgiesmugla in the Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill and the Caloundra Cup (2400m) before a fourth in the Grafton Cup (2350m) last start. The five-year-old was $3.80 (TAB) for the Premier’s Cup, ahead of Thebudgiesmugla ($4.80).

“He’s a nice horse and he’s got a bit of residual fitness,” Baker said.

“He’s got a good gate [in three] and gets through all tracks so it looks a nice race for him. He’s down on the minimum [53 kilograms] with Rachel King on, so he’s not out of it.”

Six-year-old Thebudgiesmugla has had a freshen up and trial since the Caloundra Cup and has 55kg and gate seven of 10 on Saturday. Baker had high hopes for both emerging stayers.

“Hopefully this is the start of a good spring for them,” he said.

“They are both nominated for the Caulfield Cup, and you’ve got to dream about the Melbourne Cup, but you’ve got races like the Newcastle Cup and the Metropolitan as well. There’s plenty of options, so we’ll just take it one step at a time.”

Baker’s main hope, though, for the October 10 Caulfield Cup (2400m) is ATC Derby winner Green Spaces, a $9 favourite in early markets. He returns on Saturday in the star-studded group 1 Winx Stakes at 1400m.

“We just want to get him under way,” Baker said of the $151 shot from the outside gate.

“He’ll be going back and hopefully he runs on.

“He’ll probably go to the Chelmsford after this and just build through in races like the Metropolitan, and we want to be peaking for the Caulfield Cup. That’s his main aim, and if we can get there, I’m confident he can run really well. He’s obviously proven at the 2400m.”

Baker also has Midnight Dynamite ($61) in the Winx, where he is the only runner without a group 1 win. He has risen from benchmark 78 grade to two listed level victories through the winter.

“Midnight Dynamite’s got residual fitness, but this is undoubtedly the toughest race either of them have been in,” he said.

“But you can’t fault him, he’s been running really well. He gets through a wet track as well, so the more rain we get, probably the better his chances. But we are not getting carried away. It’s a very hard race.”

Disneck ($7) resumes in the group 3 Show Country Quality (1200m) and Baker is concerned more with the forecast of rain on Friday than the draw of eight of nine.

“He’s going well, he’s had a very good base,” he said.

“The one concern is the track. The firmer the better for him, and his best runs are when he gets out in the clear air. Most horses you would say that draw is a negative, but for him, I’d be leaning towards it being a positive.

“We’ll space his runs this prep and even a race like the Sydney Stakes could definitely suit.”

Another interesting runner for Baker on Saturday is Puntin ($8) in the fourth. He broke away to a huge lead last start at Randwick before finishing third.

“He handles all tracks and he definitely responded to the blinkers,” he said.

“He’s up and going, he’s fit now and he’s capable on his day.”

As for a repeat, he said: “We’ll be positive and see what works out. We’ll leave it up to Adam [Hyeronimus].”
