According to US media, the van carrying seven people was driven by Dutchman Gijs M. Odpam, 48, who apparently failed to yield at a stop sign in Knox County and was then struck by the tractor trailer.

Three men died at the scene of Tuesday’s collision: Arno Kramer, 55, Martijn E. Van Vooren, 44, and Hermanus J. Fortuin, 55.

The driver and three other passengers, all of whom were from the Netherlands, were taken to local hospitals. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.

The Dutch foreign ministry called the incident “a terrible accident” and sent staff from other regions in the US to Ohio to aid the victims and their families.

The Dutch nationals are said to be part of a travel group of 16 people who were divided between two vans. It’s unknown where the other van was at the time of the accident, which is still under investigation.
