Not content with living in multi-bedroom mansions, the new celebrity property must-have is a high-end shed nestled at the end of your sprawling lawn.
Stacey Solomon has a Tudor-style Wendy house perched in the garden of Pickle Cottage, while Amanda Holden has installed a bespoke timber-clad garden room with floor to ceiling windows.
Similar models from Into The Garden room, which created Amanda's cabin, can cost more than £45,000 - depending on size and spec.
And hopping on the latest 'glasshouse' trend is none other than David Beckham, who set up a sleek indoor entertaining space on his £12 million Cotswolds estate, with home-grown meals served to guests on a long wooden dining table.
Aluminium glasshouses of such size and scale cost about £100,000 from companies like Alitex - and that's before they're furnished.
But other celebrities have gone for a more laid-back approach, creating rustic nooks where they can escape the noise, enjoy some peace and quiet or simply indulge in a hobby away from the main house.
During lockdown, Corrie star Beverley Callard and her husband Jon McEwen turned their humble shed into a homely 'date-night bar' with sofas, strobe lights and spirits on tap.
Known for her home tips, Mrs Hinch also designed a charming 'Hinch Hideout' for her children and in memory of her father, complete with miniature chairs, plaid curtains, soft rugs, and even a mini post-box installed outside.
So, if you're longing to upgrade your own garden, whose shed should you look to copy?
Where do you draw the line between cosy chic and an eyesore your neighbours will judge you for?
Jordana Ashkenazi, founder and design director of Element One House, weighs in on the garden shed trends that work, the ones that don't, and how to get the look right.
Amanda Holden
Amanda Holden leads the pack when it comes to ultra-luxe garden sheds
Her impressive wood-pannelled space includes a newly installed bar built with a marble top, plush neutral furniture, and glossy photo-frames hung on the wall
Amanda Holden, 55, looked to be having the time of her life in 2022 when she unveiled a first look at her lavishly transformed garden shed.
The structure was installed by Into the Garden Room, a company that creates custom, high-end architectural garden rooms, studios, and annexes - with varieties like the 'Cedar Garden Room' costing over £50,000 with customisable extras.
In photos posted to Instagram, Amanda showed off the impressive wood-pannelled space, which included a newly installed bar built with a marble top, plush neutral furniture, glossy photo-frames hung on the wall, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors.
A view of the exterior shows the flat-roofed shed sitting on top of a thick platform of decking, with decorative plants lining the sides and a hot tub tucked in the corner of the area.
Jordana said: 'This is definitely not your average garden shed. It’s much more of a luxury garden room and bar, and I actually think it’s really stylish. It feels polished, glamorous and properly designed for entertaining rather than looking like a shed that has had a few expensive things put inside it.
'I love that it has become a real extension of the home, with comfortable seating, a bar and a fireplace, but then you have the hot tub, patio area and lovely views outside as well. You could have drinks, entertain friends, relax in the hot tub or even throw a couple of deck chairs out and get a tan..
'It’s glamorous, but in a really considered way, and if you have the space, I think this is exactly how you make a garden room work hard for you.'
VERDICT: Elevated
David Cameron
Former British Prime Minister David Cameron with his £25,000 on a designer garden shed
In 2017, the former British Prime Minister revealed that he had forked out £25,000 on a designer garden shed that he installed at his family home.
Used for the purpose of writing a book at the time - much to the protest of his children who wanted to use it for a playroom - the wheeled, muted-toned shepherd's hut included a wood-burning stove, sofa bed and sheep's wool insulation.
Jordana said: 'I actually think this is really lovely. It has been done in a very stylish, considered way and feels completely appropriate for the setting. The traditional shepherd’s hut shape, muted colours and timber detailing give it a really sophisticated, quintessentially British feel without looking overdone.
'I also love that it can double as a Wendy house for the children. If you have the space, something like this is brilliant because it works for both adults and kids. It could be a writing room, a little retreat, a playhouse or just somewhere to escape to at the bottom of the garden.'
VERDICT: Very sophisticated
Laura Whitmore and Iain Stirling
Laura Whitmore and husband Iain Stirling's cosy, tartan-decorated pub-shed
The couple can now enjoy a tipple with loved ones in a pub-like setting right on their own doorstep
Laura Whitmore and husband Iain Stirling, meanwhile, took the idea of a garden retreat in a very different direction to other celebrities, transforming a standard wooden shed into their very own pub.
Dubbed 'The Snug', the cosy little hideaway came complete with a fully stocked bar, stools, tartan fabric and warm lighting - which even saw Iain getting behind the bar to pull his first pint.
Jordana said: 'This is very cute and very kitsch. It’s basically a tiny pub at the bottom of the garden, but it feels really personal rather than just themed for the sake of it.
'I love that the tartan seating gives a little nod to Iain’s Scottish roots, while the Guinness on tap brings in Laura's Irish heritage. It makes the whole thing feel warm, cosy and full of personality.'
'Would I call it sophisticated? Probably not. But I do think it looks incredibly inviting and like somewhere you could have a lot of fun with friends. It feels much more like their own little hideaway than a traditional garden shed, and I think that’s really charming.'
VERDICT: Cute and kitsch
David Beckham
David has spent years transforming a large portion of his £12 million Cotswolds estate into an extensive kitchen garden and homestead
The former footballer utilises this sleek greenhouse as a way to entertain guests with home-grown meals
Blurring the line between a garden house and a party space, David, who, over the years, has transformed part of his £12 million Cotswolds estate into an extensive kitchen garden and homestead, uses his sleek greenhouse to entertain guests with home-grown meals.
Inside is a long dining table, with bench seats to match, while a chequer-board floor and graphite grey metalwork completes the homely yet chic vibe.
Jordana said: 'David Beckham's is probably one of my favourites. It feels completely authentic to the setting and has that gorgeous, understated Cotswolds look rather than trying too hard to be a designer garden building.
'I love the use of natural timber and the fact that everything feels beautifully considered but still practical. It works perfectly with the architecture of the house and the landscape around it, so it almost feels as though it has always been there.
'It’s rustic, but in a very polished way, and for me that’s exactly what a garden shed or outbuilding should be.'
VERDICT: Rustic, refined and effortlessly stylish
Amid the 2021 lockdown, former Made in Chelsea star Binky - then pregnant with her son Wolfie - transformed an empty space in her back garden by building a stunning multi-use outhouse
The space doubles up as an office, gym and playroom for her children
Amid the 2021 lockdown, the former Made in Chelsea star - then pregnant with her son Wolfie - transformed an empty space in her back garden by building a stunning multi-use outhouse that doubled up as an office, gym and playroom for her children.
Jordana said: 'Binky Felstead’s feels more like a full garden room than a traditional shed, and while I like the idea of creating an extra usable space, I do think the structure itself is quite imposing.
'It’s a big, solid addition to the garden and, for me, it slightly dominates the space rather than blending into it.
'However, it’s amazing to have an outhouse like that. It looks incredibly functional and like a space that’s genuinely used and enjoyed by the whole family, which ultimately is what matters.
'The interiors feel cosy and considered, and I can imagine it being a really useful extension of the home.'
VERDICT: Super functional and family-friendly, but a little imposing from the outside.
Beverley Callard
Beloved Coronation star Beverley Callard posing next to her fully-stocked bar in her pub-shed
Beloved Coronation star Beverley Callard has embraced the idea of the shed as the ultimate escape, with her garden retreat offering somewhere to sit back and enjoy a little peace away from the main house - plus a drink or two from her fully-stocked bar.
With the help of her husband Jon McEwen, the actress fully converted the space into a 'Megashed', which serves as a private garden pub and date-night bar.
Rather than going all-out with the glossy finishes, the 69-year-old's space has a more traditional, homely feel, though with added strobe lights, vibrant chairs and spirits on tap, it offers the chance to let her, her husband's and her guests' hair down once in a while.
Jordana said: 'I love that they have created their own pub in the garden and clearly have a lot of fun with it, but visually this one is definitely not glamorous.
'It feels much more like a slightly dishevelled garden shed or little caravan than a polished garden room. The fairy lights, signage and slightly makeshift feel push it firmly into kitsch territory for me, and from a design point of view it does look a little lopsided and thrown together.
'That said, not everything has to be stylish to be enjoyable. It looks like the sort of place where everyone would end up at the end of the night, and there’s something quite brilliant about that.'
VERDICT: Tacky but fun
Mrs Hinch
In true Mrs Hinch fashion, the cleaning expert's garden shed is less about dusty tools and more about keeping everything beautifully organised with a homely aesthetic
She even created a rustic 'Hinch Hideout' for her children, complete with vibrant plants, fairy lights and a postbox outside, and checkered curtains, patterned rugs and white wooden chairs inside
In true Mrs Hinch fashion, the cleaning expert's garden shed is less about dusty tools and more about keeping everything beautifully organised with a homely aesthetic.
The influencer - real name Sophie Rose Hinchliffe - has shown off outdoor spaces that ooze serious creativity, from bunny sheds for her beloved pets to a workshop for her father.
She even created a rustic 'Hinch Hideout' for her children, complete with vibrant plants, fairy lights and a postbox outside, and checkered curtains, patterned rugs and white wooden chairs inside.
Jordana said of the workshop: 'I actually really like this because it has a genuine purpose. She transformed the shed into a workshop for her dad, so it feels much more personal and meaningful than just creating another entertaining space.
'It also works really well with the rest of the property. The house has that barn-style aesthetic, so the shed feels completely in keeping with what’s already going on around it rather than looking like an unrelated structure that has just been dropped into the garden.
'From a design point of view, it’s practical, simple and unfussy, which suits what it’s being used for. Not every garden building needs to become a mini members’ club with a marble bar and mood lighting.'
VERDICT: Thoughtful and tasteful
Stacey Solomon
Stacey Solomon is famous for her DIY skills - and she put them to great use when transforming this Wendy house into a charming mini-home for her children
Stacey Solomon has previously put her trademark DIY skills to work on yet another family-friendly project, transforming a run-down Wendy house into a charming tudor-style haven for her children.
The miniature home sits in the grounds of her Essex property and has been given a seriously impressive makeover, with blue-grey-and-white painted wood panelling, indoor heating, furniture and cosy touches making it feel like a tiny home of its own.
Jordana said: 'I think this is absolutely adorable. Sometimes Stacey’s colour choices can be a little bit too bold for me, but I really like what she’s done here. The blue is lovely; it feels fresh and playful, and importantly, it’s not over the top.
'It’s a children’s Wendy house, so it doesn’t need to be sleek or sophisticated. It should feel fun, playful and a little bit magical, and this does exactly that.
'I also love that she has taken something tired and given it a new lease of life rather than simply replacing it. It feels personal and homemade, which actually adds to the charm.'
VERDICT: Adorable and charming
Vic Reeves
Vic Reeves reportedly had five different sheds in his garden at one point, and in 2012, transformed a standard shed into his 'British Museum shed' filled with historic artefacts
Perhaps the biggest celebrity shed enthusiast of them all, 67-year-old comedian Vic Reeves reportedly had five different sheds in his garden at one point.
And these aren't simply five variations on the same wooden box - his collection has included an art studio, bar, art gallery, children's playhouse and even a greenhouse.
In this YouTube video, where he shows off his own bespoke British Museum shed that contains artifacts and display cabinets, his famous 'shed village' shows that when it comes to garden buildings, you really can have it all.
Jordana said: 'Five sheds is less of a garden and more of a small shed village, and the fact that one of them was even turned into a museum tells you everything you need to know about Vic Reeves.
'He clearly loves doing quirky, slightly mad things with these spaces, and I can understand the appeal of having different sheds for different creative purposes. It’s imaginative, playful and very personal.
'Is it everyone’s cup of tea? Absolutely not. It probably is not mine either. Five themed sheds could very quickly start to feel like too much in an average garden. But for Vic Reeves, it somehow works because it feels completely authentic to him.'
VERDICT: Eccentric and charming
Joanna Gaines
American interior designer Joanna Gaines, 48, turned her garden shed into an organised sanctuary where she can indulge in her hobbies, from planting to mulching to potting
Across the pond, American interior designer Joanna Gaines, 48, has given her own garden shed a distinctly stylish makeover, turning it into an organised sanctuary where she can indulge in her hobbies, from planting to mulching to potting.
Rather than simply being somewhere to stash gardening equipment, the space has been carefully arranged to make it both practical and inviting - essentially an extension of her own home with gardening at its core.
Jordana said: 'Joanna Gaines has absolutely nailed this. It’s beautifully organised, calm and practical, but it still has warmth and character. The shelving, storage and natural materials all feel purposeful rather than decorative for the sake of it.
'What I really like is that it still feels like a proper garden space. It hasn’t been overdesigned or turned into something too polished to actually use. It feels connected to nature, functional and incredibly considered.
'This is the sort of shed that makes you suddenly think you need a shed, even if you have absolutely nothing to put in it.'
VERDICT: Effortlessly stylish
Monty Don
At Monty Don's incredible Longmeadow garden in Herefordshire, the Gardeners' World presenter has a collection of shed-like spaces including a writing shed, potting shed and greenhouses
Then there's Monty Don, who arguably has more garden buildings than most of us have garden tools.
At his incredible Longmeadow garden in Herefordshire, the Gardeners' World presenter has a collection of shed-like spaces including a writing shed, potting shed and greenhouses, as well as a newer corrugated summerhouse built into the garden.
His latest addition is less about luxury and more about simply sitting back and enjoying the garden - and, after all that hard work tending to his plants, grass and trees, he most certainly deserves it.
Jordana said: 'This is exactly what I would expect from Monty Don. It’s understated, practical and completely in keeping with the garden rather than trying to compete with it. His summerhouse at Longmeadow is a simple corrugated structure, and I really like that restraint.
'In such an established garden, the building doesn’t need to shout. The planting should always be the star, and this feels as though it belongs there naturally rather than looking like a flashy garden room that has been dropped into the landscape.
'There’s something very confident about keeping it simple. It feels authentic, timeless and completely suited to its surroundings.'
VERDICT: Understated and timeless
