Like the prequel trilogy, the Star Wars sequel trilogy has often been bogged down by so much criticism that it's hard to talk about the sequels' positive qualities. A prime example is the era’s new characters, such as Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and Kylo Ren. Even more minor characters like Rose Tico, General Hux, Amilyn Holdo, and Jannah, have wormed their way into our hearts.
The last time we saw any of these characters on the silver screen was in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, but some fans might not know there’s plenty of spin-off material — books, comics, you name it — that follows the sequel characters. One of our personal favorites set in this era? The 2016 Poe Dameron comics. If you missed Poe’s adventures back then, you’re in luck: an omnibus compiling the stories of the best pilot the Resistance ever had is arriving this September.
What is the Poe Dameron Omnibus about?
The Poe Dameron Omnibus is a collection of canon adventures that follow Resistance pilot Poe Dameron, who was first introduced in 2015’s The Force Awakens and portrayed in the movies by Oscar Isaac. Poe, following in his parents’ footsteps, was a New Republic flyer who put his skills to use when General Leia Organa called on him to lead his Black Squadron on a top-secret mission.
Poe’s background wasn’t explored in depth in the sequel films, aside from the reveal in The Rise of Skywalker that he also spent some time smuggling drugs in his youth. The comics included in the Poe Dameron Omnibus don’t go into detail about that aspect of Poe’s life, but they do touch on Poe’s childhood, his relationship with beloved astromech BB-8, and the other characters who make up the Black Squadron, such as Jessika Pava and Snap Wexley. Each adventure featuring Poe and the Black Squadron highlights the challenges they faced before, during, and after The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
What comics are included in the Poe Dameron Omnibus?
There are three different comic series that make up the Poe Dameron Omnibus, which we’ve listed below:
- Poe Dameron (2016) #1-31
- Poe Dameron Annual #1-2
- Poe Dameron 1: SaBBotage
The 31-issue Poe Dameron comic is written by Charles Soule, with art by Phil Noto and Angel Unzueta. The first issue debuted on April 6 2016, and the finale concluded on Sept. 26, 2018. Check out the first five pages below.
While largely about Poe and his Black Squadron, each issue also addresses the Resistance’s ongoing struggle against the powerful First Order. The first few issues focus on Poe and Black Squadron leading up to The Force Awakens, and the plot continues after the first sequel movie and through The Last Jedi. This means that, even if you’re not a huge Poe fan, there are plenty of cameos from characters like Rey, Finn, Leia, and Chewbacca to enjoy.
Poe Dameron Annual #1-2 is written by Robbie Thompson, with art by Nicole Virella. The two-issue series follows Poe after he disobeys a direct order from Leia Organa, leaving Poe and BB-8 stranded in First Order space. Thankfully, Poe's dealt with a lot worse in his time. The series debuted on June 27, 2017, and concluded on Aug. 29, 2018.
Last but not least is Poe Dameron 1: SaBBotage, a mini-comic written by Chris Eliopoulos and Jordie Bellaire, and included in the first issue of Poe Dameron and Droids Unplugged.
When is the release date for the Poe Dameron Omnibus?
Star Wars fans will be able to get their hands on 792 pages of Poe Dameron goodness when the omnibus is released on September 8.
