Barry Mitchell, who was a bassist for the iconic rock band Queen before their breakout success, has died.

The musician's passing was confirmed by the group's official archivist Greg Brooks in a post on their Facebook page.

Posting a snap of Barry during his time with Queen, Greg wrote: 'Terribly sad news just received that early Queen bass player, Barry Mitchell, has passed away.

'His anecdotes at the convention were fascinating and offered rare insight. He will be greatly missed.'

Fans have since shared their own tributes to Barry, who they described as an 'incredible guitarist.'

Barry was Queen's second bassist between 1970 and 1971, with legendary members Freddie Mercury and Brian May joining the band during their rise to fame years later.
