Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi staged a sit-in protest outside the Delhi deputy commissioner of police’s office demanding that a first information report be registered on a complaint by a student who was injured by pellet gun fire during the youth protest in the national capital on July 20.

The Congress said that the student, Sahil Lochav, submitted a written complaint on August 14. But the police refused to register an FIR, the party alleged. Lochav approached the police again on August 17, but his emails and calls were ignored, it alleged.

Gandhi has repeatedly alleged that the police used pellet guns against Lochav and other protesters when they were marching towards Parliament on July 20. Read on.

The Cockroach Janta Party alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party sent “goons” to assault its team that had gone to inspect a government school in Rampura Kanwarpura village near Jaipur. The team had arrived in the village as part of the political campaign’s nationwide drive to improve the condition of government schools.

Videos shared on social media showed some men hitting the team with sticks and throwing rocks at their vehicle.

The campaign’s founder Abhijeet Dipke alleged that the police failed to stop the violence despite being informed that the team would visit the school. He also shared an image on social media showing a vehicle with its rear window shattered. Read on.

The Union government denied permission for Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to travel to the United States. The Ministry of External Affairs informed the state government that “clearance from political angle is denied”, said Reddy’s office.

The Congress leader, who is in the United Kingdom, will return to Hyderabad on Sunday after the first leg of a 10-day tour. He began the tour on Thursday and was scheduled to travel to Boston after his UK visit to sign agreements with educational institutes.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that the proposed programmes “should be appropriate to the office held and the purpose of the visit”, and claimed that it was not so in this case. Read on.

Samajwadi Party workers alleged that they were assaulted by Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police Avinash Pandey on Wednesday. In a video, Digvijay Bhati alleged that Pandey assaulted and abused him at the office of the senior superintendent of police. He was later taken to the Special Operations Group office, where police personnel allegedly assaulted him and hung him upside down by his feet, he alleged.

Another Samajwadi Party worker, Mohit Jatav, who accompanied Bhati to Pandey’s office, also alleged that he was assaulted.

They had gone to meet Pandey to ask him to drop their names from a first information report relating to a violent protest in July.

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan was shifted back to prison after a brief visit to an Islamabad hospital. He had been taken there for a medical examination in compliance with an order by the country’s Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, the court had directed the authorities to take Khan to hospital within 48 hours. He was expected to remain in hospital till September 16, according to the order. However, he was shifted back to Adiala jail on Friday itself.

The directive had met a longstanding demand by Khan’s party and his family who have been raising concerns about his health and poor incarceration conditions. Read on.
