Two days after announcing his separation from his wife of twenty-eight years, Kunemofa, multi-award-winning gospel artist Asu Ekiye, has explained how their marriage ended.

On Thursday, PREMIUM TIMES reported that Ekiye, known as the “Prince of the Niger Delta”, announced that he and Ms Kunemofa had gone their separate ways. The couple married in 1998 and have four children together.

However, in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Saturday, the “Woekilemo” hitmaker said his wife initiated the decision to end their marriage.

The singer said: “Based on the numerous calls and messages I have received, I believe it is necessary to offer this clarification, respectfully and without any intention to cast aspersions on anyone.

“The decision regarding the dissolution of my marriage was not one I initiated. My wife expressed her desire to end the marriage, packed out of my house and subsequently instituted divorce proceedings without any quarrels.”

Efforts

Furthermore, the “Dey by My Side” crooner said he made several efforts and appeals to save the marriage, but none of them succeeded.

He added that he bore no bitterness or ill will towards his former wife despite the many years they spent together.

According to the singer, he chose to embrace the new chapter of his life with grace, dignity, maturity and respect for everyone involved.

“For about a year thereafter, I made every reasonable effort, and appealed to her in every way I could, hoping that we could reconsider and preserve the marriage. Unfortunately, those efforts did not yield the desired outcome, as she remained firm in her decision.

“Having done all I could to seek reconciliation, I eventually came to the difficult decision to accept the reality of the situation and allow the divorce process to take its course,” Ekiye said.

Backstory

This newspaper earlier reported that Ekiye revealed that he and Ms Kunemofa never went through a conventional dating phase before getting married.

He said they met and immediately found common ground, with their dreams, spirituality and intellect aligning while their chemistry naturally developed.

The singer recalled proposing to Kunemofa on the street, saying she became extremely excited when he asked her to marry him. He added that she took two weeks before giving him her response.

Ekiye described Ms Kunemofa as a remarkable woman who fulfilled the qualities he had always desired in a wife.

According to him, she was beautiful, spiritual, focused, intelligent, nurturing, enterprising and resourceful, while also serving as his true companion.
