Event to bring together robotics experts, talented students from around the world

Kwangwoon University will host the Robofest 2027 World Championship, one of the world’s top three robotics competitions, on its Seoul campus from May 28-31 next year, the university said Friday.

The university decided to host the event after signing a memorandum of agreement in May with Lawrence Technological University in the U.S., the founder and operator of Robofest.

It said it will begin preparations for the event, which is expected to bring together robotics experts and talented students from around the world.

Since its launch in 1999, the Robofest World Championship has been held in the U.S. The 2027 championship will be the first to be held outside the country in its 28-year history.

The Seoul competition is expected to be a turning point as Robofest expands beyond the U.S. into a broader global arena. It will also serve as a platform to highlight Korea’s strengths in robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) education to an international audience.

“May 2027 will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Robofest’s 28-year history,” said Yoon Do-young, president of the university.

“As the first Robofest World Championship outside the U.S. will be held in Seoul, we will create a stage at Kwangwoon University where future robotics talent from around the world can demonstrate their skills, learn from one another and grow together,” he added.

Yoon said the university would make the event an international technology and education festival where education and research, industry and the next generation of talent come together.

He pledged to prepare for Robofest so that the event can showcase the robotics capabilities of both Kwangwoon University and Korea to the world.

The university said the championship will extend beyond its campus in Nowon District, northern Seoul.

To ensure the successful hosting of Robofest and strengthen its ties with the local community, the university plans to hold the Nowon AI and Robotics Future Education Vision Declaration Ceremony and Regional Co-Prosperity Festival in October.

The event will bring together officials from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Nowon District and Seongbuk District, as well as presidents of universities in the Nowon area, representatives from educational and research institutions, local residents and students.

They will discuss ways to build a regional AI and robotics education ecosystem centered on Robofest 2027 and explore opportunities for cooperation among participating institutions.

In addition, Robofest’s open, platform-neutral approach is expected to create new opportunities for companies to participate.

Companies will be able to showcase technologies such as AI semiconductors, robot operating systems, sensors, motors and autonomous driving solutions through the robotics competition while engaging directly with the next generation of AI and robotics talent from around the world.

Kwangwoon University plans to expand the Seoul competition beyond a robotics contest into a global industry-academia collaboration platform where companies can demonstrate cutting-edge technologies and connect with the next generation of talent.
