Andrew Tate’s accused crimes are heinous. They include, but are not limited to, rape, sex trafficking, assault and offences relating to “indecent images of a child and extreme pornography”.

The accusations are horrific enough alone to make headlines. However, people were also appalled by the outfit he was wearing during his arrest by US authorities this week.

UK prosecutors brought a further 38 charges against Tate and his brother Tristan this week, bringing the total number faced by the brothers to 59. They were both arrested in Miami on charges relating to allegations brought forward by four new victims in the UK.

The brothers have denied all allegations.

Captured by a bystander as officials put the manosphere influencer in handcuffs, Andrew was wearing a purple top, unbuttoned to accentuate his hairless chest and diamond necklaces, with black skin-tight pants that grazed his sockless ankles, a pair of loafers and aviator sunglasses.

The designers of each piece are unknown and likely to stay that way.

Online, fashion commentators around the world were fast to lampoon the look. Women were particularly condemning.

“It’s veering on aerosol you might need to pop in the tray at airport security,” says stylist Ken Thompson of the outfit. “Good taste doesn’t need to shrink in the wash and this gives new meaning to the term ‘body-con’” .

While his brother Tristan was also dressed in an unfortunately-fitted three-piece suit when he was arrested, it was Andrew’s purple get-up that had the internet laughing.

His choice styling of pants (too high and too tight) and shoes (without socks) led to many noting their resemblance to trendy clothing items favoured by It girls: capris and ballet flats. Only, Andrew’s interpretation gives more “disaster” than “Devon Lee Carlson”.

“There is a particular sort of muscle-bound character that seems to be drawn to capris,” says Sydney-based commentator Fashion Critical, who uses an anonymous pseudonym.

The fashion critic was one of the many netizens who posted satirical takes and memes about the get-up online, while The Independent declared Andrew looked like “a divorced auntie”.

“After years of Tate publicly espousing misogynistic views about how women should act and how they should be seen, to see him wearing skin-tight pedal pushers and what appeared to be ballet flats just seemed to be an open invitation for the kind of backlash he received,” says Fashion Critical.

Indeed, the outfit is appropriately ugly for a self-proclaimed “absolute misogynist” who built his profile on demeaning women.

There’s something deliciously satisfying about observing those same women eviscerate his outfit with the same verve Tate applied to asserting his abhorrent views, says Fashion Critical.

“When we’re powerless to do anything about the influence of people like Tate, critiquing their outfits feels like a small way that you can take your power back.”
