A PEDESTRIAN WHO died after being hit by a car in Co Mayo has been named locally.
Sheila Holian (81) of Glebe Street, Ballinrobe, died at Mayo University Hospital on Saturday from injuries sustained from being struck by a car while she was walking near her home last Thursday afternoon.
She died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family.
Locals said the mother of four had a long association with a number of local organisations, including Ballinrobe Golf Club.
Local councillor Michael Burke from Ballinrobe said the town is both shocked and devastated by the sad loss of one of Ballinrobe’s most popular and best-loved personalities.
“Sheila lived in Glebe Street all her life and was such an integral figure within the town centre and gave so much to the community. She will be greatly missed, a woman blessed with so many lovely qualities.
“A shadow of immense sadness has been cast over the town by the tragedy, and my heart goes out to the families impacted,” he added.
She is predeceased by her husband Pat, by her children Damien, Anne, Shelly and Edel and extended family. No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.
Sheila Holian is the 125th person to lose her life on Irish roads this year, a figure which is 12 more than the same period last year.
