The LA Galaxy announced Wednesday that Japanese forward Kyogo Furuhashi has agreed to join the Major League Soccer club in a deal that will take him through the 2030-31 season.

Furuhashi, 31, played in England last season for Championship side Birmingham City, scoring one goal in 28 league appearances while notching one more in both the FA Cup and League Cup tournaments. He has been capped by Japan’s national team 23 times but did not make Hajime Moriyasu’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Outside Japan, Furuhashi is best known for his time at Celtic, where he was signed by Ange Postecoglou soon after the Australian coach made his own trip to Scotland from the J. League. In the 2022-23 season, he won Scottish Premiership Player of the Year and the league’s Golden Boot title after scoring 27 goals in 36 games as Celtic won the domestic treble.

Before Celtic, Furuhashi spent four years at Vissel Kobe, scoring 15 goals in 21 appearances in his final season with the J. League club.

“We’re excited to welcome Kyogo to the LA Galaxy and to Los Angeles,” LA Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz said in a statement. “He brings a wealth of experience having played matches with the Japanese national team, in the UEFA Champions League and in some of the best domestic leagues in Europe.

“We’re thrilled to add a player of his caliber, goal scoring ability and diverse experience to our group and look forward to the impact he will make on and off the field.”

The deal for Furuhashi is pending the receipt of a P-1 visa. He will occupy a slot on the Galaxy’s roster reserved for international players.

The Galaxy currently sit in ninth place in MLS’ Western Conference, with 20 points from 16 games, putting the club right on the line for postseason qualification with 18 matches left to play. St. Louis City SC is one point behind the Galaxy with a game in hand.
