SEOUL, July 24 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Mobis Co., South Korea's leading auto parts maker, said Friday its second-quarter net profit rose 13.5 percent from a year earlier, driven by robust sales of high-end components and a weak won.
Net profit for the three months ended in June rose to 1.06 trillion won (US$721.9 million) from 932.4 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a press release.
"Strong demand from global automakers and increased shipments of higher-margin core components, such as automotive electronics, boosted quarterly earnings despite weaker sales of parts for electric vehicles," it said.
The won's weakness against the U.S. dollar also supported the company's earnings, it said. A weaker won increases the value of exporters' dollar-denominated earnings when converted into the local currency.
Operating profit climbed 12.1 percent to 975.2 billion won in the second quarter from 870 billion won a year earlier. Sales rose 2.4 percent to 16.32 trillion won from 15.93 trillion won.
The company said it plans to continue investing in production facilities to strengthen its competitiveness in future mobility, with research and development (R&D) spending budgeted at 2.16 trillion won for this year.
In the first half of the year, it spent 950.8 billion won on R&D to secure core mobility technologies.
For the January-June period, net profit fell 1.16 percent from a year earlier to 1.94 trillion won. Operating profit rose 7.96 percent to 1.78 trillion won, while sales increased 3.9 percent to 31.89 trillion won.
