Legendary singer Asha Bhosle was cremated with full state honours in Mumbai on Monday. Following the funeral, her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle shared an emotional message on Instagram, expressing her gratitude for the support and love shown towards her grandmother. Her last rites were held at the Shivaji Park Crematorium and were performed by her son, Anand Bhosle.
In her Instagram Stories, Zanai posted a photo from the funeral and wrote, "So overwhelmed with emotions, I'll write something when I can, but I have to say that there were so many people who have respected her and honoured her today and beyond it all shown her so much love (sic)."
She added, "I thank you from the bottom of my heart. She deserved every bit of it. I realise that she lives on in every one of us in our hearts forever, and she has seen it all from above (sic)."
Videos from the funeral circulated on social media, capturing emotional moments, including Zanai breaking down in grief.
Sharing another throwback photo on her Story, she wrote, "Goodbye my love, love of my life (sic)," followed by a heart emoji.
Prior to Asha Bhosle's death, Zanai was the first in the family to share an update on her health, requesting privacy during a difficult period following reports of hospitalisation on April 11.
She had written, "My grandmother, Asha Bhosle due to extreme exhaustion and suffering a chest infection has been admitted to hospital and we request you to value our privacy. Treatment is ongoing and hopefully everything will be well and we shall update you positively (sic)."
Asha Bhosle died at the age of 92 on April 12. She was admitted to the ICU of Breach Candy hospital on April 11 after experiencing cardiac and respiratory issues. The singer had been unwell for several months.
On Monday, Asha Bhosle's body was kept at her residence for loved ones to pay tribute. She was draped in the Indian flag as a mark of respect. Videos show soldiers wrapping her casket, adorned with white lilies, in the tricolour as she received state honours.
Several notable personalities attended the funeral at Shivaji Park, including actors Ranveer Singh, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Vicky Kaushal, Vivek Oberoi, Padmini Kolhapure, and Jackie Shroff. Political leaders present included Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Rashmi Thackeray, and Aaditya Thackeray.
Asha Bhosle was one of the most successful singers in Hindi cinema. Her career spanned over eight decades, during which she recorded songs for films and albums in several Indian languages. She received numerous awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
Some of her popular songs include Dil Cheez Kya Hai, Inn Aankhon Ki Masti Ke, Ye Kya Jagah Hai Doston, Jab Bhi Milti Hai, and Justuju Jiski Thi.
