Surigao del Sur school shifts to distance learning following bomb threat

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — Barobo National High School in Barobo, Surigao del Sur shifted to modular distance learning on Friday, July 24, after an alarming social media post threatened an attack on the school and identified several grade levels and sections as alleged targets.

The threatening message was reportedly posted by a social media page identified as “Yawa Ka.” The post opened with the Bisaya statement, “Ready na ba mo ugma, Barobo National High School?” which translates to, “Are you ready for tomorrow, Barobo National High School?”

The post claimed that an attack would begin near the school’s guardhouse and referred to a supposed “list of those to be killed tomorrow.”

Personnel of the Barobo Municipal Police Station immediately coordinated with the school administration after receiving a report regarding the circulating message.

Police conducted verification and validation procedures to determine the authenticity of the threat while implementing precautionary security measures inside and around the school.

The Barobo police said the investigation remains ongoing to trace the source of the post and identify the person or persons responsible for creating and spreading the message.

In response to the incident, the school administration announced the implementation of modular distance learning for the day.

“All learners are advised to coordinate with their respective teachers regarding their learning tasks,” the school said in its advisory.

The administration also urged parents, learners, and the public to remain calm and rely only on information released through the school’s official communication channels and concerned authorities.

The incident caused anxiety among parents and members of the community.

One parent said she had already considered keeping her children at home because of the circulating threat. Another expressed concern because three of her children were enrolled at the school.

Other parents supported the decision to shift to modular learning, saying the safety of learners should remain the priority.

Anyone with information about the threatening account, the identity of the person behind the post, or other suspicious online activities is encouraged to immediately report the matter to the Barobo Municipal Police Station. /jpv
