A mother-of-four died after she was stabbed in the back before she pulled the knife out and collapsed in the street.
Charlene Dowsell, 41, was allegedly attacked next to Newport County's football stadium in Wales on the night of July 18.
Albert Williams, 66, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court accused of the murder of Ms Dowsell, but only spoke to confirm his name and date of birth.
No plea was entered and a provisional trial date was set for January 2027.
Williams was remanded in custody by the Recorder of Cardiff, Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, before he is due to appear in court again next month.
In an emotional statement, Ms Dowsell's family said: 'To our beautiful daughter Charlene, mum of four beautiful children. They say time will heal, but time will never change how we as a family feel.
'You're so loved by everyone that really knew you. You have left us broken hearted - we are all in shock.

'We don't know what to do but we are finding comfort in memories we have of you. You did not deserve what you went through our girl.
'Losing our daughter at such a young age, she was the foundation to our family and without her it's difficult to know what to do and what comes next. Four children without a mum is just heartbreaking.
'Gone are the days we used to share but in my heart you will always be there. You're at peace now our beautiful girl. Gone but never forgotten.'
A court was previously told Charlene was stabbed in the back and after she pulled the knife out of her own back collapsed in the street and died.
Gwent Police said specially trained firearms officers responded to reports of an altercation in the early hours of the morning.
Detective Superintendent Matt Sedgebeer said: 'Our enquiries are ongoing, we continue to have a significant police presence in the area, and I ask anyone with any information that can help the investigation to contact us.
'One man has now been charged with murder, and with this in mind I'd ask people not to speculate about this case online while the legal process takes its course.'
