Sto. Niño Cathedral in Calapan to close for sanctuary renovation
CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — The Sto. Niño Cathedral in this city will temporarily close from July 28 to 31 to allow renovations to its new sanctuary in preparation for the SOLTARE Cup XVII and the canonical elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan into a full-fledged diocese.
In an advisory posted on its official Facebook page, the cathedral said the temporary closure is necessary to complete preparations for the two major events, which are expected to draw clergy and church delegates from across Southern Tagalog.
During the four-day closure, all novena prayers and Masses will be held at the St. John Vianney Parish Hall (CC Hall) instead of the cathedral.

Church officials advised the faithful to access the parish hall through the entrance near the comfort rooms and proceed straight to the venue.
The formal canonical elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan is a historic milestone that will establish the local church as the Diocese of Calapan.
SOLTARE Cup is an annual gathering of Catholic clergy from the Southern Tagalog region. While best known for its athletic competitions, organizers said the event is intended to promote holistic formation and fraternity among priests.
According to event organizers, the multi-day gathering also includes daily Eucharistic celebrations, recollections and spiritual renewal programs, fellowship activities, cultural events, and opening ceremonies that foster camaraderie and strengthen ties among regional church delegations.
This year’s SOLTARE Cup carries the theme “Sigla ng Kapatiran, Tatag ng Kaparian” (Strengthening Brotherhood, Fortifying the Clergy), highlighting priestly fraternity alongside physical, spiritual, and pastoral renewal. /mcm
