The Hyderabad City Police have urged residents to mandatorily verify the credentials of domestic workers before hiring them, revealing that 565 cases of theft involving domestic help were registered across the commissionerate in the last two years.

According to the police, the cases included 65 grave offences and 500 non-grave offences. Officials said the majority of the incidents stemmed from employers hiring domestic workers without carrying out proper background checks or police verification.

A zone-wise analysis showed that Jubilee Hills recorded the highest number of such cases at 173, followed by Secunderabad (88), Khairatabad (77), Golconda (70), Rajendranagar (63), Shamshabad (49) and Charminar (45).

Police said IT professionals, elderly persons living alone and students were among the most common victims, as offenders often took advantage of valuables left unsecured in homes. In some recent cases, gangs from other States had allegedly entered the city posing as domestic workers before committing thefts.

The police advised residents to collect identity documents, recent photographs, permanent addresses and contact details before employing domestic help. Employers were also urged to verify the worker’s background with previous employers and obtain police verification, which is available free of cost at local police stations.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said public participation was vital in preventing such crimes. “Criminals often exploit opportunities created by negligence. No one should hire domestic workers without proper police verification and background checks,” he said.

Residents were also advised to closely monitor newly hired domestic workers during the initial weeks of employment, avoid discussing valuables or travel plans in their presence, and ensure that gated communities maintained visitor registers, access passes and functional CCTV systems.

The police urged citizens to immediately report any suspicious activity by dialling 100 or contacting the Hyderabad City Police WhatsApp helpline at 94906 16555.
