John Mayer’s music has always leaned more toward pop than any other style. Throughout his career, the singer-songwriter has also worked in rock and Americana, but country has never been central to his sonic identity.
That has begun to change in recent years. Mayer still claims only a handful of appearances on Billboard’s country rankings, but one of his collaborations is quickly becoming his biggest success in the field. “Phone, Keys, Wallet,” his team-up with Lainey Wilson, appears on three charts this frame and reaches new career highs for Mayer on two of them.
John Mayer Reaches a New Hot Country Songs Peak
“Phone, Keys, Wallet” surges from No. 27 to No. 14 on the Hot Country Songs chart. The tally – one of several that focus on just one style published by Billboard that begin with the word “Hot” – measures the most popular country tracks in the United States with a combination of streaming activity, sales and radio airplay.
No. 14 marks a new career peak for Mayer on the all-encompassing genre roster. Only days ago, “Phone, Keys, Wallet” sat between his two previous country hits, “Better Days” with Zach Bryan and his solo single “In the Blood.” “Better Days” previously stood as Mayer’s loftiest placement after once reaching No. 17. “In the Blood,” which marked his first appearance on the Hot Country Songs ranking, stalled much lower at No. 39 in May 2017.
John Mayer Ties His Longest-Running Country Hit
“Phone, Keys, Wallet” has now spent six weeks on the Hot Country Songs chart, which ties it with “Better Days” as Mayer’s longest-running success on the list. That match may be broken very soon. “Phone, Keys, Wallet” is still climbing and appears unlikely to disappear when Billboard refreshes its tallies again. “In the Blood” managed only two weeks on the ranking.
John Mayer’s Single Reaches a New Billboard Hot 100 High
“Phone, Keys, Wallet” also makes a dramatic jump up the Billboard Hot 100. The duet leaps 24 spaces from No. 98 to No. 74, reaching a new peak in its sixth week on the 100-position list of the most popular songs of every style in America.
Mayer has sent 24 songs to the Billboard Hot 100 throughout his career. Somewhat surprisingly, despite emerging as a sturdy hitmaker during the earliest years of the 2000s, he has never cracked the top 10. “Say” remains Mayer’s highest-charting single. The track climbed to No. 12 in May 2008, coming within two spaces of the uppermost region. It is one of seven hits by the singer-songwriter that reached the top 20 without managing to break into the top 10.
John Mayer Holds at His Country Airplay Peak
“Phone, Keys, Wallet” does not move on the Country Airplay chart this frame. It’s the only one of the three Billboard rosters where the song appears where it doesn’t manage to climb even one space. Instead, the collaboration holds at its No. 21 peak.
The hit already stands as Mayer’s highest-charting hit on the country radio roster. He has appeared on the list only twice, and “In the Blood” peaked at No. 57 during its brief run in 2017.
Lainey Wilson Earns Another Multi-Chart Hit
For Wilson, “Phone, Keys, Wallet” is her second-lowest-peaking Billboard Hot 100 entry. Only “Can’t Sit Still,” a solo cut that debuted at No. 82 in April, has stalled lower.
The duet is, conversely, Wilson’s highest-charting hit on the Hot Country Songs chart that has yet to enter the top 10. She has placed 16 tunes on the ranking, and nine have reached the highest tier. “Never Say Never,” her collaboration with Cole Swindell, remains her biggest success after topping out at No. 2.
Wilson has performed even more impressively on the Country Airplay chart. Nine of her 15 appearances have become top 10 hits, and five have climbed to No. 1. Only four of her career entries have peaked lower than No. 21, where “Phone, Keys, Wallet” sits at the moment.
