Pakistan warns India against 'adventurism,' condemns Indian minister's Kashmir remarks

FO says comments sought to undermine internationally recognised facts; undermine peace and security

Pakistan on Monday warned that India "must not underestimate the people and Government of Pakistan's unwavering resolve and determination to thwart any Indian adventurism," saying comments by the Indian defence minister on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute distorted internationally recognized facts and reflected New Delhi's policy of threatening regional peace and security, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Office (FO).

In the statement, the FO said that Pakistan "condemns in the strongest possible terms the highly provocative and irresponsible comments by the Indian Defence Minister in the context of Jammu and Kashmir dispute."

The FO said the Indian minister's statement "not only distorts facts regarding the UN and internationally recognized Jammu and Kashmir dispute that remains on the agenda of the UN Security Council," but also "shows the Indian government's deliberate policy to threaten regional and international peace and security."

According to the statement, the remarks were an attempt to shift focus away from India's own actions. The FO said, "Such insinuations are an attempt to divert attention from India's continued occupation of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK), its sponsorship of terrorism across the region, as well as its domestic instability."

Rejecting what it described as India's "misplaced rhetoric of aggression and belligerence," the Foreign Office warned that India "must not underestimate the people and Government of Pakistan's unwavering resolve and determination to thwart any Indian adventurism." It added that this resolve had already been demonstrated by "the entire Pakistani nation and its valiant armed forces during Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos last year."

The FO further urged the international community to take notice of India's conduct, saying Pakistan "urges the international community, in particular the United Nations, to take note of India's continued rogue behavior and to hold it accountable for its failure to uphold the relevant UN Security Council resolutions that guarantee the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir."

The statement reiterated Pakistan's position that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains an internationally recognised issue on the agenda of the UN Security Council and maintained that the relevant UN resolutions guarantee the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It said the Indian defence minister's comments sought to undermine these internationally recognised facts and were reflective of policies that, according to Pakistan, endanger both regional and international peace and security.

The FO's condemnation came a day after Defence Minister Khawaja Asif rejected the same remarks by his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh, saying they could neither alter the internationally recognized disputed status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) nor change established legal realities.

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, Asif said India's attempts to misrepresent internationally recognized legal facts through "intimidation and threatening rhetoric" would not change the reality on the ground. He said Pakistan "categorically rejects the irresponsible statements made by the Indian defence minister," describing them as another attempt to distort internationally recognized legal facts through "political rhetoric and coercive posturing."

He also reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to the internationally recognised legal framework governing the Kashmir dispute, saying Islamabad rejected any attempt to undermine it through unilateral statements or political rhetoric.
