Sara Cox revealed she's the 'proud mother of a queer daughter' as she discussed LGBTQ parenting with Sam Smith.

The Radio 2 Breakfast host shares daughter Lola, 22, with ex Jon Carter and is also mother to son Isaac, 18, and daughter Renee, 16, with husband Ben Cyzer. She did not specify which daughter she was referring to.

Sara revealed the news as she spoke with Sam – who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns – about their new single Oh Mother, which is an ode to their mum Kate Cassidy.

As Sara mused that 'all mums want a song written about them', Sam agreed, saying: 'Especially queer kids, gay kids and their mums have - well at least I have a very strong, beautiful relationship with my mother.'

Sara then interjected, saying: 'I'm proudly one of them by the way, with a queer daughter,' to which Sam exclaimed 'beautiful.'

The singer continued: 'In this song I was just trying to access my mum's fury and protection that comes to save the day when a child gets hurt or heartbroken.'

Sam, who is engaged to fashion designer Christian Cowan, then revealed they have been thinking about starting a family of their own.

They continued: 'As I'm getting older I feel like I'm becoming more maternal and more definitely hungry one day to have children myself and things like that.

'So it definitely felt like a maturing theme to step into for me, which was really great.'

Sara replied: 'I mean, she's there for you through the tough times and even you say as a kid, but even as a grown up, your mum's always going to be there for you.'

Sam concluded: 'Oh my gosh, yeah, I mean my dad and my mum, my sisters, my whole family have been a rock for me through everything I've gone through.'

Sara previously spoke about the struggles of balancing work and motherhood, telling The Times Magazine last year: 'When you first go on maternity leave, it's unsettling. You wonder what your career will be like afterwards.

'Luckily, when I had my two younger children I was with my husband, Ben, and had a great support system.

'I was able to get back to work, but you always feel like you have taken a couple of steps back. I often say to the kids I am sorry I am not there, I am sorry I missed that, but they know what I do.

'I hope they won't have to have therapy in the future because they had an absent mother.'

Yet Sara has also discussed the importance of boundaries, saying: ‘I never wanted to be one of those parents you used to see in trashy magazines, under a headline like “Me and my daughter are best friends”.

'There’d be photos of them in lycra, going out clubbing together – eurgh! Still, it’s really nice when you realise you’ve reached a stage where you can go out and do things together that all of you are enjoying – we all went to see Beyoncé last year and it was great.’

Sara discusses the trials and tribulations of parenting on her podcast, The Teen Commandments, which she co-hosts with best friend Clare Hamilton.

Yet while her youngest two children live at home, her eldest Lola is away at university studying art.

Sara previously said she was at peace with Lola moving out, saying as much as she loves her daughter, they've had enough of living under one roof and Lola is ready for her independence.

She said on the Parenting Hell podcast in 2023: 'She's ready to leave the nest, she's full-feathered, legs are dangling over the edge of the nest.'

When asked how she'll react when she drops Lola off to start college, Sara said: 'Celebrate - get absolutely leathered.'

She compared her relationship with her daughter now to how she feels after spending time with her own mother – saying they can only take so much of each other before wanting to be apart.

She said: 'It's the same when my mum comes down, I don't even drop her off at Euston any more, I pop her in an Uber - she's used to it. She's had enough of me and I've had enough of her.

'We (Lola and I) are a bit like that - "I love you, but we're done now." She'll be off.'

Sara then described her parenting as 'done', saying she feels she's on the home stretch with regard to not having to look after them any more.
