Minority Welfare Minister N. Md. Farooq said that the AMRUT 2.0 scheme would provide a permanent solution to the drinking water issues in Nandyal town.
The Minister, accompanied by District Collector Rajakumari Ganiya, laid the foundation stone for a comprehensive water treatment plant (WTP) with a capacity of 16 million litres per day (MLD) to be constructed at a cost of ₹38.75 crore under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme within the premises of the Head Water Works on Mahanandi road.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Farooq expressed happiness at the launch of key drinking water infrastructure development projects for Nandyal town under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. He said that the current storage of 1.7 tmcft of water in the Velugodu reservoir was contributing to some extent to the recharging of groundwater levels.
He urged the farmers to cultivate crops that require less water instead of water-intensive crops like paddy, given the possibility of water scarcity in the district due to the impact of El Nino.
The Minister said it was a matter of pride for the district that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had praised Nandyal district during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme for the effective implementation of groundwater conservation, tank restoration, and water preservation measures. The Prime Minister’s special mention of Ms. Rajakumari’s efforts during the programme was described as a national-level recognition of the collective performance of the district administration.
Meanwhile, Ms. Rajakumari said that the Minister had laid foundation stones for three major development projects in Nandyal constituency at a total estimated cost of ₹211 crore. The Collector explained that the works included a minor tank rejuvenation project (₹3.50 crore), a sewage treatment plant (STP) with a capacity of 32 MLD (₹169.67 crore), and a water treatment plant (WTP) with a capacity of 16 MLD (₹38.75 crore).
She said that upon completion, these projects would ensure availability of clean drinking water for the residents of Nandyal town, and will also eliminate the shortage of drinking water in the future. She said that treating sewage using scientific methods before releasing it in an environmentally friendly manner would provide a permanent solution to drainage issues. She noted that the rejuvenation of the small tank would increase groundwater levels in the surrounding areas and further strengthen local water resources.
The Collector assured that the three projects would be completed within the stipulated timeframe while adhering to quality standards and would be made available to the public.
