Palestinian health workers said a woman delivered a stillborn baby in an ambulance after the vehicle was reportedly delayed by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint in the occupied West Bank on Monday, AFP reported on Monday.

The 28-year-old woman was six months pregnant and unconscious when medics collected her from her home in the village of Qaryout, south of the city of Nablus, medic Bashar Qaryouti told AFP.

"She was suffering from very heavy bleeding and her condition was extremely critical," Qaryouti said, adding that the ambulance was heading to Rafidia hospital in Nablus via Awarta checkpoint, where the Israeli soldiers stopped the ambulance.

He said Israeli soldiers at the checkpoint forced him to switch off the ambulance at gunpoint despite him explaning that the vehicle's medical equipment was being used to keep a patient alive. A nurse accompanying her was forced delivering the stillborn baby.

The bleeding woman was rushed to the hospital after waiting at the checkpoint over 30 minutes and is now in stable condition, report said.
