Purpose beyond prestige: Jay-ar D. Sta. Ana’s Oxford Highest Honors Distinction and mission to transform lives
Some journeys are measured by the places they reach. Others are measured by the lives they hope to change.
When Jay-ar D. Sta. Ana graduated with Distinction from the Master of Science in Major Programme Management at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School, he received the programme’s highest academic recognition. In the UK’s educational system, a “Distinction” represents the pinnacle of academic achievement, equivalent to a Summa cum laude standing. But for the Filipino entrepreneur, educator, and business leader, Oxford was never the destination. It was another step in a lifelong mission to create opportunities for others.
That mission began in a humble, scaled-down home in Paniqui, Tarlac.
Growing up, Jay-ar knew what it meant to have very little. There were days he went to school on an empty stomach, wrote on recycled notebooks passed down by his older sister, and wondered why opportunity seemed so unevenly distributed. Rather than allowing hardship to define him, those experiences shaped the values that continue to guide him today: resilience, gratitude, empathy, and an unwavering belief that every person deserves a chance to succeed.
Education became his way forward. He graduated as Salutatorian of Paniqui South Elementary School before earning scholarships that led him to become Valedictorian of St. Rose Catholic School. At Far Eastern University, he made history as the Institute of Nursing’s first Summa cum laude graduate and became a National Finalist in the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) where he was recognized at Malacañang Palace. He later completed a Master of Education in Special Education at De La Salle University before pursuing postgraduate studies at Oxford.
While every school he attended sharpened his skills, where he consistently excelled academically and emerged as a student leader, it was at Oxford where his perspective on leadership was fundamentally transformed. The programme challenged him to think beyond organizations and projects, asking leaders to consider the systems they influence and the people affected by every decision.
“The greatest lesson I learned is that every decision affects someone who is not in the room.”
For Jay-ar, those unseen stakeholders include future generations, vulnerable communities, frontline workers, and the environment. Leadership, he believes, is not measured by personal success but by the systems leaders leave behind and the opportunities they create for others.
That philosophy now shapes every organization he leads. As Chief Executive Officer of Star Terran Development Corporation, he leverages advanced data analytics and AI to champion smart developments. Under his leadership, the company uses these technologies to perfectly optimize green spaces, climate resilience, and renewable energy solutions. Through Starjobs
Innovations, he runs an app that helps people find quick side gigs to earn extra income. The platform connects over 10,000 freelancers and relievers with clients looking for on-demand services. This platform has already helped hundreds of users finish school, manage their everyday expenses, and even save up for travel and new gadgets.
Beyond business, he mentors MSMEs through the Department of Trade and Industry’s KMME Program and serves in leadership roles across industry organizations, believing that knowledge gains value only when it is shared.
His next goal reaches even further. Jay-ar hopes to work with government, academia, and industry to advance Strategic Foresight in the Philippines, helping institutions anticipate future challenges and design more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable policies.
For someone who once questioned why opportunity seemed reserved for others, the answer has become a lifelong pursuit: build better systems so that more people can thrive.
Because in the end, the true measure of success is not the titles earned or the places reached. It is how many lives are empowered because you chose to make opportunity possible.
