The 35-year-old victim was discovered by staff on Sunday at Hotel Rheinpark in Rees, a German town about 30km south of Doetinchem.

A postmortem examination confirmed that the man had been strangled. He checked in to the hotel with another man on Saturday evening, but only the victim’s details were recorded in the guest register.

A murder inquiry was launched and forensic researchers spent several hours examining the room after the body was found at around noon, after the two guests failed to check out on time.

German media said the pair arrived on Saturday in a Dutch-registered car from the Enschede area.

Police are treating the man who checked in to the hotel room with the victim as the main suspect and have launched an urgent appeal to find him. They are also studying camera footage and trying to trace the two men’s route through phone data.
