SEOUL, July 28 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean won strengthened against the U.S. dollar Tuesday, despite foreign selloff of local stocks amid a semiconductor rout.
The won was quoted at 1,462.5 won per dollar at 3:30 p.m., up 6 won from the day before.
The won started the day at 1,465 won per dollar but clawed back in morning trading, in spite of heavy selling of local stocks by overseas investors.
Foreigners sold a net 4.9 trillion won (US$3.3 billion) worth of local stocks during the trading session, with the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index sinking 10.84 percent to close at 6,023.66.
Moon Jung-hee, an economist at KB Kookmin Bank, said actual dollar buying appeared to be limited despite overseas investors dumping local stocks.
The won's appreciation was also supported as SK hynix Inc. converted its proceeds from a mega U.S. listing into the Korean currency, some analysts said.
