Phivolcs: No tsunami threat to PH after 7.1-magnitude Japan quake

MANILA, Philippines — There was no tsunami threat to the Philippines following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Kyushu, Japan on Tuesday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake occurred at 3:28 p.m. and had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

While Phivolcs warned that hazardous waves may occur along coasts within 300 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter, it said that “[t]his is for information only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake.”

With this, it said that no action is recommended from this event.

As Japan is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where volcanoes and seismic activity sites are located, the country is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The Philippines also lies within the Ring of Fire, making it vulnerable to these natural hazards. /jpv
