Canada's Oliver Dawson powers into breaststoke final at Commonwealth Games

Fellow Canadians Josh Liendo, Lorne Wigginton among others advancing

Canadian swimmers were back in action on Day 5 of the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday in Glasgow, with several moving on to their respective finals.

Oliver Dawson was the top qualifier in the men's 200m breaststroke. The Grande Prairie, Alta., native touched the wall in 2:10.05, and will contest the final later Tuesday at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

Lorne Wigginton qualified for the final of the men's 400m individual medley, finishing second in his heat in a time of 4:17.23. The Calgary native set the Canadian record earlier this month in Montreal, swimming to a time of 4:11.32 at Canadian swim trials.

Josh Liendo advanced to the semifinals of the men's 50m butterfly. The Toronto swimmer – who won gold in the men's 100m butterfly – posted a time of 23.66 seconds to move on to Tuesday evening's semifinal.

Ella Jansen, of Burlington, Ont., will be a reserve for the final of the women's 200m individual medley. Jansen finished her heat in 2:13.43.

Ben Winterborn will swim in the semifinals of the men's 100m backstroke after the Kingston, Ont., swimmer recorded a time of 55.55 in the heats.

The Canadian foursome of Madison Kryger, Sophie Angus, Ben Loewen, and Antoine Sauve advanced to the final of the mixed 4x100m medley relay heats, combining for a time of 3:51.80.

Canadian athletes shine at Scotstoun

The second day of athletics competition at Scotstoun Stadium saw Ottawa's Lauren Gale win her heat in the first round of the women's 400m, advancing to the semifinals with a time of 51.59 seconds.

Canadians Sienna MacDonald and Hannah Blair are seventh and ninth, respectively, after the first two events of the women's heptathlon. MacDonald won her 100m hurdles heat in 12.99 seconds while Blair finished in a season's best 13.93.

In the high jump, Blair cleared a height of 1.73m while MacDonald reached 1.64m.

In the first round of the men's 800m, Abdullahi Hassan's time of 1:47.30 was good enough to get him to the semifinals, but fellow Canadian Justin O'Toole (1:49.07) finished fifth in his heat and did not advance.

Austin Cole did not advance past the the first round of the men's 400m, finishing his heat in a time of 47.87.

Other Canadian results on Tuesday

• Canadian weightlifter Braydon Kennedy of Mission, B.C., did not finish competition in the men's 88kg division. Kennedy had a successful lift of 161kg in the snatch before three unsuccessful attempts at 182kg in the clean and jerk.
• Canada has two weightlifting medal hopefuls in action later Tuesday: Maude Charron of Rimouski, Que., will look for a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women's 63kg final, and Charlotte Simoneau, of Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., competes in the 69kg women's final.
