Vice-Chancellor of Sri Murugarajendra University, Chitradurga, K.B. Gudasi has said that the ideals propounded by 12th Century social reformer Basavanna remained timeless truths applicable across all castes, regions, and generations.
He was speaking at the programme organised to mark the 250 episodes of ‘Vachanamruta’, a radio programme based on vachanas of the 12th Century ‘vachanakaras’, produced by Basava Peetha of Karnatak University and broadcast by All India Radio, Dharwad in Hubballi on Sunday.
He observed that Basavanna taught that authority was not about power or domination but a profound responsibility to lead society on the path of equality.
He added that incorporating Basavanna’s philosophy into modern education was both appropriate and essential.
He said that ‘Basava Peetha’ (Basava Study Chair) of Karnatak University and All India Radio, Dharwad, had played a vital role in taking the ‘vachanas’ of the 12th Century ‘sharanas’ to every household.
Chairman of Dr. M.M. Kalburgi National Trust, Dharwad, Veeranna Rajur said that vachanas were expressions born out of personal experience and therefore contained solutions to the many challenges of human life.
“The philosophy of ‘Dasoha’ (selfless sharing and service) is the central path of the Sharana tradition, and that the Shivasharanas taught society that knowledge becomes meaningful only when it is shared for the welfare of all,” Mr. Rajur said.
Member of the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission C.M. Kundagol said that Vachanamṛuta was a popular radio programme that beautifully blended literature, music, and spiritual experience.
In-charge Registrar of Karnatak University Ramanjaneyalu said that through the radio programme, the university had successfully carried knowledge to the last person in society.
Manjula Puranik, head of Akashvani Dharwad; Sharanabasava Cholin, former programme head of Akashvani; Shyam Mallanagouda and Mahesh Hullannavar, members of the Karnatak University Syndicate; and Vijayakumar Kammar, one of the contributors to the programme, shared their experiences and views about the radio programme.
Presiding over the function, A.M. Khan, Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, said that Basaveshwara Peetha was conducting highly meaningful and socially relevant programmes through its active engagement and thanked all the philanthropists for joining hands with the university in continuing the radio programme.
Coordinator of Basaveshwara Peetha Nijalingappa Mattihal welcomed the gathering and highlighted the growth, significance, and rich legacy of Vachana literature in Karnataka.
Gurusiddha Rajayogendra Swami of Moorusavira Math, Hubballi, attended the event and delivered a discourse appreciating the work done by the university in taking vachanas to the households. Several scholars, officials and students were present.
